STORY: Approximately 2,500 high school 4-H and FFA students from throughout California will gather at UC Davis for the state's largest agricultural field day competition. The 16th annual Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Field Day is hosted by the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
WHEN: Friday, March 6, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, March 7, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
VISUAL Friday Parliamentary Procedure contest (Finals at 8 p.m.)
OPPORTUNITIES: FFA students will participate in this unusual and lively display of their abilities to debate and speak extemporaneously on a variety of current political and social issues. The event will be held in Memorial Union II.
Saturday morning competitions (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
Livestock and Light Horse: These are the largest competitions of the day, each drawing more than 260 student participants. Students in the different Light Horse classes will judge Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and Arabians. There also will be two performance classes in which the students will show their horses at the rail and over jumps. Livestock classes feature judging of beef, sheep and swine. Both contests will be held at the UC Davis Cole Facility.
Agricultural Sales: Students must give sales presentations. They will be tested on sales and marketing skills, customer relations, job interviews, applications, and advertising and promotions. To be held in Olson Hall.
Computers: Students give presentations on computer science as it relates to agriculture. They will be tested as teams on their computer skills. To be held at Storer Hall.
Among the other 21 competitions will be tractor driving, poultry judging, land judging and floriculture design.
PARKING: Parking is free for media representatives who place a business card on the dashboard of their vehicles.
