$500,000 Grant to Help California Rangeland

Grazing livestock on public land resurfaced as a national issue recently when the Clinton administration proposed raising the feesthat ranchers pay the government for using the land. Administration officials described the heart of the proposal as an effort to restore the ecological health of grazing areas throughout the West. Toward this end, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded $500,000 to implement a comprehensive effort to expand the two-year-old UC Rangeland Watershed program, which teaches ranchers ways to minimize the environmental impact of their activities. UC Davis Cooperative Extension Specialist Mel George and colleagues will conduct a literature review of alternative grazing practices, study and monitor alternative grazing practices and host field days for producers and symposia for scientists, regulators, policy-makers and industry leaders.
