The University of California, Davis, has initiated "appropriate personnel actions" and is returning funds to appropriate accounts following an investigation of alleged mishandling of funds by radiology department employees at the UC Davis School of Medicine, Vice Chancellor for Administration Janet C. Hamilton said today.
While there appears to be no evidence of personal financial gain by any employee, $250,000 was placed inappropriately in radiology accounts for department-related expenses and nearly $80,000 placed in unauthorized accounts for social activities.
The majority of the funds were provided by medical-supply vendors in the form of rebates negotiated through a nationwide consortium of approximately 100 academic teaching institutions.
The $250,000 is being returned to appropriate university accounts, Hamilton said.
The investigation showed that, over the past five years, $78,933 was spent on departmental social activities. Vendor donations were solicited for annual medical resident dinners ($20,391), holiday parties ($9,655), golf tournaments ($6,494), and tennis tournaments ($970). An additional $41,423 was withdrawn from a university vendor account for annual holiday parties.
"Based upon the recent audit of these reported irregularities, we have initiated appropriate personnel actions and will follow all personnel policies in doing so," said Hamilton. "To protect individuals' rights, these actions are considered confidential, so it would be inappropriate to provide further detail."
The investigation, initiated by the university last July, involves UC Davis auditors and personnel officials, the UC Davis police department and the Sacramento district attorney's office.
"While, at this point, there appears to be no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, we have provided our files to the district attorney's office for their further investigation," Hamilton said. "We take very seriously any suggestion of the mishandling of funds and are taking steps to prevent future breaches of policy."
