Affirmative Action Debate Continues in Conference

The public debate over affirmative action continues during a daylong public policy conference Thursday, May 9, at the State Capitol. The conference, sponsored by UC Davis, University Extension and the UC Davis law school, will explore differing perspectives on the controversial subject. "The goal of the conference is to create a forum of balanced discussion that reflects the multidimensional aspects of the affirmative action issue. The dialogue about affirmative action affects education, employment, business and public contracting," says Martha West, a UC Davis law professor and conference moderator. Conference speakers and panelists include attorneys, academics, journalists and business professionals interested in the issue. Richard Rodriguez, author of the books "Hunger of Memory" and "Days of Obligation," will present the keynote address. West will give an overview of the history of affirmative action. The California Civil Rights Initiative also will be discussed. The conference fee is $55.
