The 24th annual African American Family Week, celebrating African American history and culture, will be held Monday through Friday, May 9-13, at the University of California, Davis.
The cultural days celebration includes lectures that highlight issues affecting black Americans and art and entertainment reflecting the African American experience.
The week's events include:
• Opening ceremonies, featuring Assemblywoman Gwen Moore, D-Los Angeles, and the UC Davis Gospel Choir and Black Repertoire.

• Metaphysicist Carmen Stephine Mays on "The Word 'Nigger': a Metaphysical Analysis."
Noon Wednesday, May 11, MU II in the Memorial Union
• Choreographer/anthropologist and UC Regents Lecturer Pearl Primus on African and African American dance.
5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center
• College motivational program.
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, May 12, MU II in the Memorial Union
• Georgia State University professor and keynote speaker Asa G. Hilliard III on "Africa: Origins of World Civilization."
7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 12, Freeborn Hall
• African American dance presentation by choreographer/anthropologist and UC Regents Lecturer Pearl Primus and the Black Repertoire.
Noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, Wyatt Pavilion
• Gospel "extravaganza," featuring the UC Davis Gospel Choir directed by Calvin Lymos.
