African American family week marks 27th year

The 27th annual African American Family Week, celebrating African American history and culture, will be held May 12-16 at UC Davis. Highlights of the week's activities include gospel singing, talent show, a cultural fair and a college motivational program. The festival also features lectures by author June Gatlin, who recently wrote "The Spirit Speaks to Sisters." She will discuss the importance of spirituality as it relates to African American women on Tuesday, May 13, beginning at 8 p.m. In addition, Linda Myers, a psychologist and author at Ohio State University, will lecture on the black family on Thursday, May 15, beginning at 7 p.m. Both lectures will be in the Cabernet Room of the Silo. African American students will showcase their dancing talents with a celebration of past and present rhythm and blues, hip-hop and rap music during their Apollo Night performances. That event will take place in the Wyatt Pavilion on Wednesday, May 14, beginning at 6 p.m. The highlight of the week will be the performance of the UC Davis Gospel Choir on Friday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in Freeborn Hall.
