Africanized Bees L.A.- Bound, May Be Northern Limit

It remains to be seen whether the Africanized honey bees, which made their California debut Oct. 24 at the Chuckwalla Valley State Prison, west of Blythe, will migrate farther north into the state, but they almost certainly will move into the Los Angeles Basin, according to a UC Davis bee expert. "The bees found last month in Riverside County were an almost pure African genetic strain," says Eric Mussen, a UC Cooperative Extension apiculturist at UC Davis. Their advance throughout Texas and Arizona has slowed considerably this past year, and the aggressive bees may be reaching their northern limit, he says.
