Hunger haunts the daily lives of an estimated 800 million people around the world, according to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization.
Addressing issues of global hunger, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman will participate in a World Food Day discussion with UC Davis faculty and students and the general public at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the campus's Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.
Glickman will talk about U.S. Department of Agriculture programs aimed at solving food and nutrition problems in the United States and abroad. He also will respond to questions and comments from the audience.
His visit is hosted by the UC Davis Department of Nutrition, whose international nutrition program plays an active role in shaping global food and nutrition policy.
UC Davis researchers are studying issues such as the importance of micronutrients in meeting nutritional needs in developing countries, obesity as an epidemic problem in the United States and an emerging health issue in developing countries, and the role of proper nutrition in preventing disease and lowering health-care costs.
World Food Day, which marks the anniversary of the 1945 founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization, is observed annually on Oct. 16 in more than 150 countries.
