Increased classroom participation by farmers and ranchers usingsustainable methods was urged by participants in a recent roundtable gathering of agricultural educators from Yolo, Sacramento and Solano counties. "The teachers suggested that they would like to see establishment of a speakers bureau of farmers involved in sustainable agriculture and willing to come to their classrooms to speak or provide hands-on demonstrations," says David Campbell, an economic and public policy analyst for the Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program and a UC Davis political science lecturer. The roundtable, sponored by the Bio-Integral Resource Center and funded by the California Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, was held at Sky High Ranch near Winters, Calif. The ranch is known for its reduced pesticide use, low-tillage practices and wide range of integrated animal, tree and field crop systems.
