"Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism," a book by author bell hooks, will be discussed at noon Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the University of California, Davis.
The discussion will take place in the Moss Room of the Memorial Union at a meeting of the Black/African American and African Women's Book Group.
A writer and teacher, hooks (who chooses not to capitalize her names), focuses on issues such as class, race and gender. In "Ain't I a Woman," hooks describes the impact of sexism on black women during slavery, the historic devaluation of black womanhood and black male sexism. She also explores black women's involvement in feminism.
The discussion, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Women's Resources and Research Center. A copy of the book is available in the WRRC's library and the UC Davis bookstore. For more information, call (916) 752-3372.
