Vollmann Mike Ware Photographers featured in the exhibition are linked by their deviation from the mainstream tradition of silver-gelatin printing to what are now termed historical, unconventional and alternative methods. The artists use light-sensitive metal compounds other than those containing silver to develop photographic prints. Nearly all materials must therefore be handmade, resulting in a time-consuming process with a multitude of outcomes. The exhibition is the outcome of a workshop in Alternative Photographic Processes held at California State University, Long Beach, in 1998, led by Sacramento artist and teacher, Roger Vail. Many photographers have since joined the original participants, and 22 local, national and international artists are participating in the exhibition. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition, with essays by Mike Ware, a chemist and photo-historian from England, who co-led the Long Beach workshop, and Mary Swisher, a Sacramento artist and one of the original workshop participants.
