Hal and Carol Sconyers, longtime supporters of the University of California, Davis, have established a charitable trust of $590,000, the proceeds of which will benefit four campus programs.
Athletics, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the campus nonprofit support group UC Davis Foundation and the cultural arts program UC Davis Presents will each receive a quarter of the gift.
Charitable trusts are becoming a key part of UC Davis' fund-raising effort. Last year, the campus raised just under $60 million in private support. Currently the UC Davis Foundation is managing 14 trusts valued at $4.6 million.
"Hal and Carol have, once again, demonstrated their outstanding support of UC Davis. So many areas of the campus will have a stronger, brighter future because of their benevolence," said Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef.
A 1952 graduate of UC Davis, Hal was founding president of the Modesto Banking Co. He retired in 1991, 36 years after he began his banking career as an agricultural loan officer for the Anglo Bank in Sacramento. Hal and his wife, Carol, began their married life in Aggie Villa student housing during Hal's senior year.
"Two years ago we chose to return to Davis to reconnect with the university community during our 'golden years,' and we have found our experiences to be energizing and very worthwhile. What UC Davis administration, professors and staff do, they do well!" he said.
Support of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, Team Aggie, construction of the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, two scholarships through the Students First Campaign as well as membership in the Davis Chancellor's Club and service as a trustee of the UC Davis Foundation are all examples of ways the Sconyers have contributed to the educational excellence at UC Davis.
