A University of California center working to reduce the use of animals in research and to improve their care has been honored by an international animal welfare organization.
The UC Center for Animal Alternatives, located at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, received a $2,000 grant from Our Animal WARDS. WARDS, based in Vienna, Va., was established in 1953 to optimize care standards for research animals and combat animal abuse in the general public.
The new grant will support the development of bibliographic computer search templates. Created by librarians collaborating with campus scientists and veterinarians, the templates provide efficient access to the best literature on selected topics and equip scientists to keep abreast of improved methods in animal care, as required by federal regulations.
