Army Nurse To Address Military Ban On Gays

Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer, discharged from the Army last year in a highly publicized case, will address the military policy regarding gays and lesbians in two public talks Wednesday, Feb. 3, at UC Davis. Cammermeyer, who had nearly 27 years of service, was discharged because she identified herself as a lesbian. She is now challenging her case in federal court. Awarded a bronze star for her tour in Vietnam and chosen in 1985 as the Veteran Administration's Nurse of the Year, Cammermeyer had hoped eventually to become the country's chief military nurse. Her talks, which are free and open to the public, begin at noon in MU II of the Memorial Union and at 7 p.m. in the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.
