To honor the contributions the late artist Robert Arneson made to generations of UC Davis students, the Memorial Union Art Gallery will display a specially assembled memorial exhibition titled "Robert Arneson: Portraits of Family and Friends."
The exhibition, organized by the UC Davis gallery with the help of Sandra Shannonhouse, Arneson's wife, and his family, will gather for the first time portraits Arneson made for his family and friends over a 10-year period. This will be the first showing of many of the portraits.
Arneson taught ceramics and design at UC Davis for 30 years, retiring in 1991 as a professor emeritus of fine arts. He was a pivotal figure in the establishment of ceramic sculpture as a serious art form and a pioneer in the "funk" art movement.
Two of Arneson's outdoor sculptures are permanently displayed on the UC Davis campus, including "Bookhead," in front of the Shields Library. Arneson died on Nov. 2, 1992.
Twenty-seven portraits will be shown in the exhibition, including ceramic busts of Arneson's sons, Leif, Derek and Kirk; a bronze and ceramic sculpture of his wife; and a self-portrait as Santa Claus, made for his daughter, Tenaya.
In addition, exhibition sculptures and drawings representing colleagues and friends will include a 1975 ceramic portrait of Roy DeForest and more recent drawings of Mike Henderson, Viola Frey, David Gilhooly and others.
Arneson was born on Sept. 4, 1930 in Benicia, Calif. After graduating from Benicia High School, he attended the College of Marin in Kentfield. Arneson continued his education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1954 and at Mills College in Oakland where he received his Masters of Fine Arts degree in 1958.
Arneson's first one-person exhibition was displayed at the Oakland Art Museum in 1960. His sculpture and drawings have been featured in more than 300 solo and group exhibitions, and his works are found in major public and private collections in the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan.
The reception and exhibit are open to the public; admission is free of charge. The Memorial Union Art Gallery is wheelchair accessible. Campus visitor parking includes metered public parking in the new parking garage on Howard Way; visitor parking permits are available in parking lots VP 25 and VP 5 as well; parking is free on Saturday and Sunday.
The exhibit will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Nov. 25-26; Christmas/New Year's holidays, Dec. 24-Jan. 2; and Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 17.
The exhibition dates are made in advance and may be subject to change. Please call to confirm exact dates and titles of the exhibition.
Following its UC Davis showing, the exhibit will travel to the Benicia Public Library Gallery, opening on Feb. 1.
