Lectures, music, performances and a cultural fair are among the free events open to the public April 24-29 during the annual Asian Pacific Cultural Week at the University of California, Davis.
This year's theme is "From the Margins of the Past to the Center of the Future." Highlights surrounding the event include:
• The Asia-Pacific Film Festival, featuring seven films from countries including Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Iran.
7 p.m. and 9 p.m. April 17-20, Room 194 in the Chemistry Bldg.
• "Tea," a play by Velina Hasu Houston that depicts the struggles of five Japanese women married to American soldiers after World War II and how they find peace and a sense of community in the United States.
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 24, Room 3 of Kleiber Hall
• "Affirmative Action: Friend or Foe?,"a debate with UC Regent S. Stephen Nakashima and Henry Der, representing Chinese for Affirmative Action.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, MUII in the Memorial Union
• "Showtime at the Wyatt," performances by local Asian American talent featuring Lani Luv, Unrealized Potential, BTS, Fuzzy, and True Romance.
7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, Wyatt Pavilion
• "Sisters with Voices," a talk by Raquel Sancho, co-founder of the GABRIELA network, an organization dedicated to assisting women in developing countries. She will address parallels between womens movements in the Filipines and the United States.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, MUII in the Memorial Union
• "Yellow Power," a talk by activist Yuri Kochiyama on the history and the future of the Asian American student movement.
Noon Thursday, April 27, MUII in the Memorial Union
• "Alternative Medicine: A Cure for All?", a discussion about the variety of healing practices that offer alternatives to western medicine.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, MUII in the Memorial Union
• Culture Night, dance and musical performances will be featured during an evening cultural presentation by student groups.
7 p.m. Friday, April 28, Freeborn Hall
• Asian Pacific Cultural Faire, a daylong festival featuring ethnic foods, colorful dances and music, as well as games and crafts for children and performances by regional groups.
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, on the Quad
• Performances by Here and Now, a Los Angeles-based acting troupe of college students who act out various vignettes about identity, acculturation and conflicts regarding Asian American heritage.
