Averting Violence, Allowing Self-Expression in Gang Fashion Styles

Understanding how gang identity is exhibited through clothing and appearance is critical for both law enforcement officials and educators. Whether a style of dress represents gang identity or is simply an adolescent expression of style is a central question for such officials in drafting policies related to appearance. This question will be addressed in the upcoming "Gang Identity and Clothing Style" conference to be held at UC Davis April 28-29. Law enforcement and school officials, as well as academics and youth program leaders, will discuss ways to avert potentially violent situations related to clothing style while, at the same time, creating supportive situations allowing for creative expression through appearance. In addition, conference participants will discuss future safety-intervention strategies.
