Back to School

In the middle of a successful career as an advertising professional, Peggy Browneller decided to go back to school at UC Davis to become a teacher. The 43-year-old single mother saw a chance to get the college degree that she long postponed for family and her first profession. Although she may be older than some of her professors, Browneller and others like her don't necessarily stand out in class. There is a growing national trend that shows older students returning to college, according to Phil Knox, academic re-entry coordinator at UC Davis. More than 2,000 UC Davis undergraduate students attending the Davis campus are 25 years old or older. "The changing world of work brings lots of people back," says Knox. "The shift toward service industries, the recession and advanced technology has made higher education attractive to workers. Also some individuals choose to return to college as an adaptation to changes in family and personal circumstances." On Saturday, Feb. 26, UC Davis is inviting potential students to campus for Reentry Day. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about financial aid services, entrance requirements and application procedures at a four-hour workshop in MU II beginning at 8:30 a.m.
