WHAT: It's back to school for more than 22,000 students at UC Davis. The fall quarter enrollment of freshmen has been reduced from last year's record number of 3,294 to an estimated 2,325. The number of transfer students from community colleges is also lower from 1,557 in 1990 to an anticipated enrollment of 1,105 for this year. Careful planning, following larger-than-desired enrollment spurts the past few years and more recent budget shortfalls, is causing the campus to pause in its gradual climb to its enrollment target of 26,850 students by the year 2005. The expected fall enrollment, including medical interns and residents, is 23,494, which is 404 fewer students than a year ago.
WHEN: Orientation Week begins Sunday, Sept. 22, at noon, when thousands of students begin checking into their residence halls. Instruction begins on Thursday, Sept. 26.
