A Benicia firm that produces meticulously researched hand-printed reproductions of 19th and early 20th century wallpapers will display its designs in the UC Davis Design Gallery.
The historic factory, which enjoys an international reputation for its adaptations of stenciled and hand-painted decorations, also produces new patterns created by skilled designers working in the traditions established more than a century ago.
The exhibit highlights the elaborate wall and ceiling decorations of the Victorian era, and traces the transition from Victorian exuberance to the restrained interior designs of the early 20th century arts and crafts period.
The firm's arts and crafts collection is designed specifically for houses of the early 20th century: English Edwardian, American Bungalow, Prairie, Foursquare, Colonial Revival and Australian Federation. The American Bungalow style has been a recent interest of Bruce Bradbury, firm founder.
Bradbury's interest in historical interiors started as a teenager, when he fell under the spell of English Victorian designer William Morris. After research in England and several years as an apprentice in wallpaper factories, he began redesigning and hand-printing the elaborate wall and ceiling decorations of the Victorian period in a one-man shop in Benicia in 1979.
Bradbury & Bradbury wallpapers grace the interiors of the Fallon Hotel in Columbia, Calif., the State Capitol, the Kearney Mansion in Fresno and in historic buildings across the United States.
The wallpapers also have a list of motion picture credits, including "The Horse Whisperer," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "James and the Giant Peach," "Hook," "Dracula" and "Chaplin."
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
