California community college presidents and district chancellors will examine ways to increase the number of community college students, especially those from underrepresented groups, transferring to UC Davis, during a one-day conference Friday, March 5. It will focus on how faculty at community colleges can facilitate the transfer process. Faculty can be very helpful in influencing students, especially minorities, to continue their education at the university, according to Dan Roy, conference coordinator. UC Davis has transfer-admission agreements with 55 state community colleges, more than any other California university. "We say that if a student meets the academic standards we will guarantee that person an opening on this campus," says Roy. The program has become a model duplicated nationally, according to Roy. UC Davis will enroll 1,450 transfer students for the upcoming fall quarter, 12 percent of those are from underrepresented ethnic groups.
