Topics ranging from the glassy-winged sharpshooter to premium wine sales will be examined at a seminar on the business and science of winemaking at the University of California, Davis, Jan. 28 to 31.
The Wine Executive Program is being presented by UC Davis' Graduate School of Management and the Department of Viticulture and Enology. The sold-out program has attracted middle and senior managers from public and private wineries, vineyards, industry suppliers, distributors, financial institutions, service providers and affiliated businesses.
Sessions open to the media are:
* "The Wine Industry in the 21st Century" -- Jan. 29, 8 a.m., Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Robert Smiley, dean of the Graduate School of Management and a wine economist, will present an overview of the United States and international wine industries and discuss recent developments regarding prices and popularity of different varietals. He will also talk about strategic considerations for wineries and vineyards.
* "Targeting the Sharpshooter: Current Grape and Wine Research" -- Jan. 29, 9:30 a.m., Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. The session will examine pest, irrigation and fruit-quality management; wine phenolics (chemical compounds); and problem fermentations. The presenters will be James Wolpert, chair of viticulture and enology; Roger Boulton, a professor of viticulture and enology and a chemical engineer; and Christian Butzke, a Cooperative Extension specialist.
* "Selling and Distributing Premium Wines Without Getting Lost," Jan. 29, noon, the University Club. Bruce Herman, senior vice president and general manager of The Estates Group of Young's Market Co., will be the speaker.
* "'There Oughta Be a Law' -- And There Is!", Jan. 29, 6:30 p.m., Silo Pub. Ron Larson, senior vice president-corporate attorney and general counsel for Trinchero Family Estates, will speak on the laws and regulations governing winemaking and alcoholic beverages.
