Campus Authors Celebrated at Annual Gathering

Campus authors who have published in the past three years will be the focus of a public celebration Wednesday, Oct. 27. The event, sponsored jointly by the Library Associates, campus Academic Senate and UCD Bookstore, will be held 5:30-7 p.m. in Memorial Union's King Lounge. The sponsors have invited nearly 90 campus authors to participate, and plan to display as many books as possible. The books cover topics such as physical and biological sciences, law, economics, human behavior and the environment, and include works such as novels, short stories and poetry. In a brief program 6-6:30 p.m., six faculty authors will describe their fields of research and their writing processes. Below are the names and books of the authors to be featured. • "Power Foods," by Liz Applegate, a lecturer in nutrition. • "The Spanish Tradition in Louisiana: I, Isleno Folkliterature" and "Folkliterature of the Sephardic Jews, III: Judeao-Spanish Ballads from Oral Tradition," both by Samuel G. Armistead, professor of Spanish. • "Truth Versus Precision in Economics," by Thomas Mayer, professor emeritus of economics. • "Fish: An Enthusiast's Guide," by Peter Moyle, professor of wildlife and fisheries biology. • "The Gendering of Melancholia: Feminism, Psychoanalysis and the Symbolics of Loss in Renaissance Literature," by Juliana Schiersari, associate professor of Italian. • "The Natural History of Shells," by Geerat J. Vermeij, professor of geology. Also present will be Robert Grey, interim executive vice chancellor; Karl Romstad, chair of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate; and Marilyn Sharrow, university librarian.
