Campus Leads Country with Most Ph.D. Grads in the Biosciences

UC Davis leads the country in doctoral graduates in the biosciences, according to a report recently released by the National Research Council. Using figures from academic year 1991-92 as the most current available numbers, the report shows UC Davis in the number one spot, having conferred 126 doctoral degrees in the biological sciences. The campus has remained at the head of the list for at least six consecutive years. "This reflects UC Davis' research strength in the biological sciences and our solid commitment to providing high-quality graduate education," says Donald L. Curry, acting dean of graduate studies. Curry credits the success to the breadth and diversity of campus graduate group programs in which faculty from different schools and colleges cut across traditional department boundaries to cooperate on instruction and research mentorship. "We expect the people who earn these Ph.D.s to be the leaders in the biological sciences, including fields such as biotechnology that are growth areas for the state," says Mark McNamee, interim dean of biological sciences.
