Campus Leads Country with Most Ph.D. Grads in the Biosciences

UC Davis leads the country in doctoral graduates in the biosciences for the seventh consecutive year, according to a report recently released by the National Research Council. The report shows UC Davis in the No. 1 spot, having conferred 123 doctoral degrees in the biological sciences in the academic year 1992-93, for which the most current numbers are available. The campus has topped the list since 1986-87, the first year that the report included the table showing doctorates by institution and major field. "We expect the people who earn these Ph.D.s to be the leaders in the biological sciences, including fields such as biotechnology that are growth areas for the state," says Mark McNamee, interim dean of biological sciences. "The quality of research and the quality of graduate education go hand in hand," says Leslie Sunell, assistant dean of graduate studies. "This reflects well on both UC Davis' research strength in the biological sciences and our solid commitment to providing high-quality graduate education."
