The University of California, Davis, has scheduled a public memorial service for the victims of the March 27 boat accident in the Sea of Cortez. The service will be held Monday, April 10, at 4 p.m. in Freeborn Hall on the UC Davis campus. The ceremony will be open to all family, friends, colleagues, students and members of the public who wish to remember the five who did not return from the research expedition in Mexico and to offer condolence to their families. The memorial will honor Gary Polis, chair of the UC Davis Department of Environmental Science and trip organizer; Michael D. Rose, postgraduate researcher and technician for Professor Polis; and Kyoto University ecology professors Masahiko Higashi, Takuya Abe and Shigeru Nakano. (Professor Nakano remains missing and is presumed dead.) The service will be followed by a brief reception. Those who wish to attend the service may park in the parking structure north of Freeborn Hall, off Russell Boulevard on Howard Way. NOTE TO MEDIA ONLY: Media will have access to cover the event from a location inside Freeborn Hall. More details will follow.
