Carole A. Barone, vice president for information systems and computing for New York's Syracuse University, has been chosen to oversee the development and coordination of computing, information and communication services at the University of California, Davis.
In her new position as associate vice chancellor for information technology, Barone will provide pivotal guidance for the campus as it links its computing, information, and communications technology and programs to provide state-of-the-art service to faculty, students, staff and administrators.
Among the programs she will coordinate are a $16 million telecommunications system and an $8 million computing services operation on campus. In addition, Barone will coordinate the growth and development of an emerging campuswide computer network called UCDNet, which also provides access to national and international computer networks.
"The campus has reached a point in its growth and development where Dr. Barone's skills and talents are much needed," said Chancellor Theodore L. Hullar. "We're in an age where effective communications and information technology is critical for carrying UC Davis' highly successful teaching and research programs into the 21st century."
Barone, 48, currently is responsible for a range of information technology programs at Syracuse University, where she has worked in various positions since 1969. Her staff of 500 full- and part-time employees provide services in the areas of academic and administrative computing, registrar operations, alumni and development information, admissions and financial aid processing, as well as office systems and communications.
In addition to her university work, Barone is active in several professional organizations. She currently serves as chair of the board of directors of CAUSE (Association for the Management of Information Technology in Higher Education), is a member of the board of trustees for EDUCOM (Interuniversity Communications Council Inc.), and is a member of the board of directors for NYSERNET (New York State Educational and Research Network).
Barone holds a doctorate and master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in anthropology from St. Louis University.
UC Davis officials praised the breadth of her experience in the field, her effectiveness in coordinating complicated programs, as well as the strength of her ties with the computing industry.
"She has a good reputation for working well with people, listening to their ideas and suggestions, and successfully integrating these into effective programs," said Larry Vanderhoef, executive vice chancellor and provost at UC Davis.
Barone, who will start in her new position Oct. 7, said she looks forward to her new responsibilities.
"I am excited at the prospect of joining a university with the potential of UC Davis," she said. "I look forward to working with the university community to link information technology to the fulfillment of that potential."
