Celeste E. Rose, National Collegiate Athletic Association public affairs group executive director and former University of California assistant vice president, has been named vice chancellor for university relations at the University of California, Davis, pending approval by the UC Board of Regents.
Rose, 47, will be UC Davis' chief institutional advancement officer, with responsibility for fund raising, alumni affairs, government and community relations, public communications, advancement services and cultural programs. She will provide strategic leadership in the development, integration and execution of all external relations activities. Her appointment is to be effective July 1.
"Celeste brings exceptional qualifications to the position, including the ability to provide strong leadership to University Relations and to the campus more broadly," said Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef.
Rose has served as the NCAA's group executive director for public affairs since 1997, overseeing offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Overland Park, Kansas.
Her previous association with the University of California is extensive: assistant vice president for university relations and special assistant to the president, 1992-1997; UC Office of the President management fellow, 1991-1992; associate director of state governmental relations, 1986-1991; assistant director of state governmental relations, 1984-1986.
She served as a legislative aide for former California Assembly Speaker Willie L. Brown, Jr., from 1981 to 1984.
"I couldn't be more pleased to be named the vice chancellor for university relations at Davis, my law school alma mater," said Rose. "It is a marvelous opportunity to serve and to advocate on behalf of the campus -- a world-class university dedicated to excellence in its instruction, research and public service."
She succeeds Richard E. Matheny, who retired from the vice chancellor post in July 1997. Associate Vice Chancellor Virginia Kelsch has served as interim vice chancellor since Matheny's retirement.
"I will be forever grateful to Gina for her service as interim vice chancellor and for her many contributions to the campus," said Vanderhoef. "She will continue to be a highly valued member of our UC Davis management team."
Rose received a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA in 1977 and a law degree from UC Davis in 1982. She attended Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management in 1990.
She received an Alumni Citation of Excellence Award from UC Davis in 1994. Her professional memberships include the American Association of Higher Education, the American Association of University Women, the Association of American Universities Public Affairs Network, and the National Association of State and Land-Grant Universities and Colleges Council on University Relations and Development.
