Ceremony to Dedicate Multicultural Mural

A recently completed outdoor mural designed to portray the increasing variety of cultures and ethnic groups at the University of California, Davis, will be dedicated at a public ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the campus's Freeborn Hall. The ceremony includes ethnic foods; dance, music and traditional songs by Native American, African American, Chicano-Latino and Asian-Pacific American student groups; and an opportunity to talk with the artists who created the mural, titled "The Unfinished Dream." The event begins with an informal reception when food will be served and guests may talk with Miranda Bergman and Kim Anno, the artists from Berkeley and Oakland, respectively, who were commissioned by the campus's Art in Public Places program to produce the mural. At noon, the masters of ceremonies, Gopal Dayaneni and Denise Isom, open the program with welcoming remarks and a description of the events that led to the creation of the mural. Dayaneni is a student who was one of the earliest advocates for the mural, while Isom is a graduate student who served on the committee that planned the dedication ceremonies. Presentations by each of the ethnic student organizations will include an explanation of the significance of the mural to their group, and an artistic performance. Speaking on behalf of the Native American Student Union is Michelle Streeter, a member of the original committee that planned the mural. Titus Frenchman, a UC Davis student, will sing traditional songs of his Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) tribe. Flo Li will speak for the Asian-Pacific American Coalition. A performance will be given by the Mga Kapatid Dancers, a Filipino dance group. Jose Borrego, co-chair of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, will deliver remarks for the Chicano-Latino Student Council. Performing will be the dance group Danzantes del Alma. Angelo Williams, a member of the Associated Students of UC Davis Executive Council, will speak for African American Students United, followed by a performance by the UC Davis Gospel Choir. -more- 2-2-2 Multicultural Mural Dedication Scheduled to make statements during the program are Theodore L.
