Wilma Mankiller, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, will make two public presentations at the University of California, Davis, on Friday, Oct. 22.
At noon in Freeborn Hall, Mankiller will give an address titled "Building Community," in which she will discuss her involvement in community improvement, focusing on health, housing and business in her role as chief of one of the largest tribes in the United States. She has been cited nationally for her leadership in building communities.
She will speak earlier in the day on health care in the Cherokee Nation at the UC Davis Medical Center at 9:30 a.m. at the ASU Auditorium, 2315 Stockton Blvd. in Sacramento. Seating, which is limited, may be reserved by calling (916) 734-4535. Both presentations are free and open to the public.
"We are pleased to offer the campus community a leader of such national stature: one who has brought about significant changes in economic development, education and health care for the Cherokee Nation," said Angie Wehr, chair of the UC Davis Staff of American Indian Descent, which is hosting Mankiller during her visit to campus.
Mankiller has been honored frequently in the past decade for her achievements. She was cited by Harvard University in 1986 for her outstanding contributions to American leadership and Native American culture, named Woman of the Year in 1987 by Ms. Magazine, and awarded honorary degrees by Yale University and Dartmouth College.
Mankiller became active in Indian causes in San Francisco during the 1960s and early 1970s, gaining skills in community organization and program development. Those skills have enabled her to bring about dramatic growth in economic development, health care and in other areas. As chief of the 150,000-member Cherokee Nation, she manages an annual budget of more than $66 million.
Following her presentations on campus, Mankiller will attend an Indian-style potluck beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Center in Davis, which is open to the public. Those attending are invited to bring a potluck dish to share.
