WHAT: High school and college students from California will discuss a number of social issues related to Chicanos, including the perception that academic departments can be places where culture and language clash. More than 500 students are expected to attend the one-day workshop at UC Davis.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 12, beginning at 9 a.m.
WHERE: Wellman Hall, UC Davis campus.
PARKING: Media may park in any of the campus parking lots without charge by placing a business card on the dashboard.
COMMENTS: Selected faculty and students from the University of California system will address such topics as "Problems Chicano and Latino Youths Are Facing in the Neighborhood and School" and "The Controversial Celebration of Columbus Day."
Speakers will include muralist and poet Jose Montoya; author Gomez Quinones; Beatriz Pesquera, professor of Chicano studies; and Angie Chabram, assistant professor of Spanish and classics. Pesquera and Chabram are both faculty members at UC Davis.
The conference is sponsored by the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) of UC Davis. MEChA is among the most prominent Chicano/Latino student organizations in the United States.
