Children Are Primary Victims of Farm Accidents

Farm children between the ages of 10 and 15 suffer the greatest number of death and injury accidents, according to a soon-to-be released 10-year study led by Dr. Marc Schenker, a professor of environmental medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine. Machinery accidents appear to be the leading cause of personal injury accidents involving rural farm children in California -- especially children of Latino farmworker families, the study indicates. It also shows that most injuries are the result of operating equipment that is not designed for injury prevention or lacks proper safeguards.
