Children are Primary Victims in Farm Accidents

Children between the ages of 10 and 15 suffer the greatest number of deaths and injuries on U.S. farms, according to a 10-year study led by Dr. Marc Schenker, a professor of environmental medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine. The findings are to be published in a forthcoming issue of the American Journal of Public Health. Machinery accidents appear to be the leading cause of personal injury accidents involving rural farm children in California -- especially children of Latino farmworker families, the study indicates. It also shows that most injuries are the result of operating equipment that is not designed for injury prevention or that lacks proper safeguards.
