Citrus and Groundwater Protection Guide

Solutions to groundwater contamination from pesticides and nitrateare now available in a new publication from the Davis-based statewide UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. "There are many positive steps citrus growers can take to prevent groundwater contamination," says Chuck Ingels, author of the 40-page leaflet, "Protecting Groundwater Quality in Citrus Production." The publication describes how chemicals move from farms to groundwater and the history of nitrogen and weed management in the citrus industry. Strategies suggested for protecting groundwater while maintaining fruit quality and yield include wellhead protection and techniques for managing nitrogen, weeds and irrigation. Thorough information on cover-cropping as well as case studies of growers who have successfully used many of the suggested practices are included in the $5 publication, available from the ANR Publications, University of California, 6701 San Pablo Ave., Oakland, CA, (510) 642-2431.
