Classes Begin, Survey Finds Campus Less Costly

UC Davis students returning to school the end of September may find some comfort in a recent survey that reveals they spend less money on housing and food than students attending other UC campuses. The average monthly housing and food cost for UC Davis students living on campus was $570, compared with $610 for those attending other UC campuses, according to the student expenses and resources survey completed for UC financial aid offices preparing student budgets. The report also shows the median parental income for UC Davis undergraduates ($52,000) is lower than that reported by all UC undergraduates ($55,000), says Bernie Yaklin, an administrative analyst in the campus office for student affairs research and information. About 200 fewer students than last fall are expected when classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 30. A student body of 22,698 is anticipated.
