Comparison of Standards of Behavior Focus of Talk

A talk on the theories developed by the late social scientist Norbert Elias will be given at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the University of California, Davis. Titled "Asia and Europe: Civilising Processes Compared," the talk will be delivered by Stephen Mennell, a professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.  It will be given in the DeCarli Room of the Memorial Union. Elias is the author of the two-volume work "The Civilising Process" (1939). Social scientists recently have come to regard his ideas as important in understanding social change in Western society at the level of emotions and manners. Mennell is the author of many works, including "Norbert Elias: Civilization and the Human Self Image" (1989) and "Individual Action and Its Social Consequences in the Work of Norbert Elias," contained in "Human Figurations: Essays for Norbert Elias" (1977). Mennell's appearance is sponsored by the UC Davis Humanities Institute, the College of Letters and Science, Graduate Studies, Department of Sociology and Department of History.
