WHAT: Record-holding UC Davis engineering students will test their fuel-efficiency vehicles "Side FX" and "Shamu" during the annual West Coast Supermileage Competition. Last year, Side FX set a U.S. record for gasoline-fueled vehicles of 3,313 miles per gallon, and Shamu set a world record for methanol-fueled vehicles of 2,083 miles per gallon. Last week, the UC Davis team won top prize for best mileage at the Society of Automotive Engineers' East Coast Supermileage Competition in Michigan, in a competition that involved more than 20 colleges and universities from Canada and the United States. The UC Davis vehicles are products of a vehicle-design class taught by engineering professor Andrew A. Frank, who hopes his course produces engineers who can find inventive solutions to everyday problems.
