Computer Camp Gives Underrepresented Youth Chance to Log on

Eighth-graders in Sacramento-area schools will get a chance this summer to log on to computers in a new series of free classes for underrepresented and low-income students sponsored by the UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program and Whole Earth Electronics. The unusual collaboration between the Bay Area-based company and UC involves no monetary exchange for the use of the Whole Earth computer stations. "Whole Earth has a training facility that's underutilized. UC saw this as a fantastic opportunity to offer hands-on computer learning for young people," says Roy Desmangles Jr., regional coordinator for the UC Davis outreach program. The computer camp, known as Computeen 1994, is expected to teach the basics of computer learning to eighth-graders, an age group considered to most benefit from such an experience. The summer computer session begins June 20 and will continue for four weeks.
