Conf. Stimulates Intellectual Ties Between Faculty and Students

What: More than 130 undergraduate students at UC Davis have been busy preparing their research projects for oral presentations to the faculty. The students will present their work at the sixth annual Undergraduate Research Conference. "Possibly no campus activity does as much to encourage undergraduates to participate in serious research across the curriculum or to develop close intellectual ties between students and faculty mentors," says Peter Dale, acting vice provost of academic programs and dean of undergraduate studies at UC Davis. Students who take part in the conference get the kind of encouragement toward pursuing graduate work that one usually thinks of as available only at small and expensive liberal arts colleges, notes Dale. When: Saturday, April 8, 9:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Where: Wellman and Freeborn halls, UC Davis Visuals: Students will present their research projects to faculty, staff and other conference participants in either an oral or poster format. In oral presentations students give a 15-minute presentation of their topics followed by a 5-minute question-and-answer period. Each session will be monitored by a faculty member. In the poster format, students will design a visual poster representing their research. Background: The conference is designed to acquaint undergraduates with the process and academic rigors of presenting research in a scholarly manner. Additionally, the conference will stimulate interaction between students and faculty, while encouraging undergraduates to pursue advanced degrees toward the goal of research and college teaching.
