Approximately 100 campus researchers and food industry leaders from throughout the nation will gather at UC Davis Monday, June 8, for a daylong conference about "Food Choices for Health and Well-Being."
The meeting will be held in Alpha Gamma Rho Hall at the campus Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The conference provides a forum for industry representatives and academics to discuss how to best develop healthier foods for consumers.
Opening the meeting will be Bruce German, a UC Davis food science professor, who will give an overview of research on "functional foods," those products that not only supply calories but also may offer a specific protective health benefit.
Other conference topics will include grains that are genetically modified for certain nutritional attributes, changing expectations for diet and health and genetically engineered milk proteins.
A highlight of the day will be a panel discussion from 11 a.m. to noon by food industry leaders that will focus on new food products.
Media representatives are invited to attend the conference free of charge but should let conference planners know if they intend to stay for lunch.
The conference is sponsored by UC Davis' California Institute of Food and Agricultural Research.
