WHAT: Yes, Virginia, it is possible to turn a profit while using environmentally friendly farming techniques. That's the theme of the upcoming conference "Partnerships for Sustaining California Agriculture: Profit, Environment and Community." During this two-day conference, farmers and industry representatives from throughout California will meet with policy-makers and governmental officials to share successful approaches for developing profitable farming systems that conserve natural resources. WHEN: March 27-28, Tuesday and Wednesday. A complete program is available online at . WHERE: The Heidrick Ag History Center, 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland. VISUALS: Interviews can be done in front of vintage agricultural equipment. To arrange on-farm interviews with growers who are using sustainable agriculture methods, contact Kristin Mick by Friday, March 23. BACKGROUND: For years, California farmers have been stereotyped as being divided into two opposing camps: the idealistic, low profit organic types and the high-input, high-profit traditionalists. But as modern agriculture evolves, it's becoming apparent that more and more farmers are seeking the middle ground by adopting practices that are economically sound, socially responsible and environmentally sensitive. Keynote conference speakers will include: Paul Dolan, president of Fetzer Vineyards, talking at 9 a.m. Tuesday about agroecology; and John Ikerd, professor emeritus of agricultural economics from the University of Missouri, speaking at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday about the social and economic aspects of sustainable agriculture. The conference is co-sponsored by the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program and University Extension in conjunction with government and industry groups. DIRECTIONS: From Sacramento, take I-5 north toward Woodland to the Road 102 exit. From the exit, go straight across Road 102 and you'll be on Hays Lane. The Heidrick Ag History Center is located at the end of the street on the left.
