The issue of sexual orientation in such commercial films as the "Alien" series and Neil Jordan's "The Crying Game," as well as recent developments in gay and lesbian experimental films will be explored during "Looking Out/Looking Over," a conference to be held May 14 and 15 at UC Davis in the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Twenty film scholars will present short papers, accompanied by video clips. In addition, two premiere film presentations will take place during the conference: Peter Friedman's "Silverlake Life," a graphic depiction of the effects of AIDS, and Su Friedrich's "Rules of the Road," a lesbian revision of the road movie, which formed the basis of the genre of buddy movies such as "Thelma and Louise."
