Conference to Push Next Generation of Clean-Fueled Cars

The hydrogen-and-oxygen-powered technology behind "fuel cells"holds the promise of generating energy for cars and electricity for utilities with virtually no pollution. To identify policies to guide fuel cells into the marketplace within the next decade, the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies and the Sacramento Municiple Utility District will co-host a two-day meeting called "Toward a Fuel-Cell Future: Planning for Commercialization of Fuel Cells." It begins on Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza Hotel in Sacramento. "Fuel-cell vehicles may enter the market slightly behind electric cars and may gain greater acceptance with consumers," says conference organizer Marshall Miller, an energy analyst specializing in fuel-cell policy. He splits his time between the UC Davis ITS and the Berkeley transportation group of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
