Conference Shows How to Strengthen Communities Through Farms, Gardens

Community gardens and community-supported agriculture can bring homeless people, welfare recipients and other marginalized groups back into their communities, according to a UC Davis nutritionist and food systems analyst. Gail Feenstra, with the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, will show how farmers can reach out to communities in need during the Community Supported Agriculture conference Nov. 12-14 in San Francisco. Community Supported Agriculture is a general term for farms that have a direct relationship with a community of consumers, Feenstra says. The idea behind the program is to actively involve the public with the people who grow food. Co-sponsors of the conference include UC SAREP and the UC Davis-based Small Farm Center. Sample food boxes from subscription farms and gourmet organic lunches will be available at the Fort Mason conference site.
