Consumers need to eat more fruits and vegetables, but our food supply needs to be safer, says William C. Liebhardt, director of the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. Liebhardt says that there are alternatives both for consumers who want to reduce pesticide risk for their families and for farmers who are eager to reduce pesticide use. "Consumers can seek out increasingly available organic and reduced pesticide produce, and farmers can make use of sustainable farming practices now available," says Liebhardt.
