The campus community will be asked to ponder the challenges that face UC Davis in the next five to 10 years of growth when Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef gives his annual address at the Fall Convocation, 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, in Freeborn Hall.
In "The Myths and Realities of the University Culture," Vanderhoef will lay out issues for the next decade.
Before the chancellor speaks, the special guest speaker for the event, Alexandra Navrotsky, an interdisciplinary professor of ceramic, Earth and environmental materials science, will talk about "Interdisciplinary Education -- A Neat Opportunity."
Navrotsky is the faculty member leading Nanophases in the Environment, Agriculture and Technology, a cross-disciplinary research program she devised for Davis. She is primarily appointed to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science but also is attached to the departments of chemistry and geology in the College of Letters and Science and land, air and water resources in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
The UCD Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Kern Holoman, will play Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, op. 98 III: Allegro giocoso for the prelude as well as the Hail to California alma mater. The symphony will close with Offenbach's "Can-Can" from "Orpheus in the Underworld."
Following the convocation, the campus community is invited to a reception on the Freeborn patio. Student orientation will be held Sept. 27-29, and classes begin Sept. 30.
