Costumes of Africa to be Displayed at Design Gallery

Exhibit Title: "Costumes of Africa: From the Collection of Dick and Beany Wezelman" Date: Oct. 17 to Nov. 19 Where: Design Gallery 145 Walker Hall University of California, Davis Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 2-5 p.m. Sundays, closed holidays Reception: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 Symposium: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 A 30-foot-long chief's skirt from Zaire, a hand-embroidered Grand Boubou from Nigeria worn to display one's wealth enroute to the mosque, and a colorful Egungun from West Nigeria are among highlights of the "Costumes of Africa: From the Collection of Dick and Beany Wezelman" exhibit at the Design Gallery. The Wezelmans, of Berkeley, are world travelers, collectors and dealers in international folk art who have been collecting African textiles since 1964. Costumes from their collection included in the exhibition are from daily life and ritual ceremonies in the sub-Saharan regions. Admission to the Design Gallery is free. A special symposium, co-sponsored by the Design Alliance and the Costume Society of America, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6. The day will include a slide lecture, tour of the exhibition conducted by the Wezelmans, box lunch and guest speakers.
