Cuban Feminist Scholar Visits California Universities

A feminist scholar from Cuba is scheduled to university-hop across the state as part of a University of California, Davis, invitation to participate in a cultural exchange with Californian educators. The visit by Norma Vasallo, director of the University of Havana's women's studies program, is unusual, says Adaljiza Sosa Riddell, retired senior lecturer of Chicana/o studies at UC Davis and retired coordinator of the Chicana/Latina Research Center on campus. "This is the first time we've brought a Cuban woman scholar to UC Davis," she says. Originally Riddell invited four faculty members from the women's studies department to come to California last summer when she accompanied a group of 60 Chicano and Latinos who traveled to Cuba to create scholar-to-scholar contacts. Vasallo will be participating in the 15th annual Chicana/Latina Summer Research Institute at UC Davis, which is devoted to exploring the issues for Chicanas and Latinas working in higher education. The institute is open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to those who teach and do research at universities and colleges. Vasallo will speak in a public meeting 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, on "La Mujer Cubana: Ayer y Hoy: Cuban Women: Yesterday and Today" (the talk will be in Spanish). The event will be in the Recreation Pool Lodge on the UC Davis campus. She will also be visiting California State University, Chico; San Francisco State University; and several in Southern California including UC Riverside and UC San Diego.
