Design Approved for Environmental Services Facility

A design plan for the new environmental services facility at the University of California, Davis, and the accompanying environmental impact report have been approved by the UC Board of Regents. The facility, to be located on 6.7 acres west of Highway 113 a half mile south of Hutchison Drive and north of the Agricultural Services headquarters, will replace the existing one built in 1971 off La Rue Road. It will provide state-of-the-art equipment and handling of hazardous wastes generated by teaching and research laboratories and other campus activities. Chemical, biological/medical and low-level radioactive waste materials will be collected at the site and held, processed as appropriate, and transported to recycling or disposal facilities. With construction costs of $13.4 million, the facility will be funded through state capital improvement funds. Construction is expected to begin mid-1996 and be completed by mid-1998. The 44,000 gross-square-foot facility will be one story constructed of several types of concrete block, with integral beige color, white door and window frames, patina green metal roof and green tinted glass. It was designed by ED2 of San Francisco, in association with executive engineers Brown & Caldwell of Pleasant Hill. The facility's gabled forms, scale and style reflect an aesthetic prevalent in the surrounding agricultural community, according to campus project manager Gary Allen.
