Design works created by the first group of students enrolled in the University of California, Davis, Master of Fine Arts program in textile arts and costume design will be on exhibit beginning May 31. The six students in the program began their two-year endeavor in 1994.
The textile arts and costume design MFA program emphasizes both studio work and written research. The curriculum includes courses in theory and criticism, current studio practices within the breadth of the discipline, and research problems with historic or ethnic textiles and costume. The students' studies culminate in individual solo exhibitions that feature their skills, creativity and intellectual accomplishments.
Their works -- dimensional textile forms, printed and woven textile imagery and wearable art -- will be on display in solo exhibitions around the campus in the Design Gallery, 145 Walker Hall, through June 23; the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, through June 30; and the Memorial Union Gallery, through June 14.
Those exhibiting their works in the Design Gallery will include Wendy Haworth, Gail Katz and Mary Yeager. Buehler exhibitors will be Soon Jung Yim and Susan Avila. J.R. Campbell is exhibiting in the Memorial Union gallery.
Themes in the various works include contrasts in historical warrior cultures; architectural references on cloth; maps; botanical forms; and the use of emblems and patches as symbols of experience. Techniques and materials include computer-integrated design, weaving surface design, screen printing, handmade paper, industrial sewing machine-made nets, embroidery and bead work.
Design Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Memorial Union Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Buehler Center is open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. The exhibits are free and open to the public.
